of the first water

درجه یک -  از بهترین کیفیت

Means of the finest quality. This idiom comes from the gem trade and refers to a grading system for diamonds and their color or luster compared to the shininess of water.  The clarity of diamonds is assessed by their translucence; the more like water, the higher the quality. This comparison of diamonds with water dates back to at least the early 17th century.i

The first water in Diamonds means the greatest purity and perfection  of their complexion, which ought to be that of the clearest drop of water. When Diamonds fall short of this perfection, they are said to be of the second or third water, &c. till the stone may be properly called a coloured one.

Michael Jordan is obviously a basketball player of the first water who would be of enormous value to any team.i

i-Where can you find the largest diamond in the world?i

i-On a baseball field!i

A diamond is a beautiful, clear stone used in jewelry, but it is also the name of the playing field in the game of baseball. A baseball diamond is shaped something like the stone.i

Athough the most perfect diamonds are mined in far-off lands, in America there are diamonds that are much bigger and more precious. Any American can tell you that these diamonds are found on a baseball field!i

i-How do you make seven even?i

i-Take off the s!i

Seven is an odd number: that is, it can't be divided by two. The opposite of an odd number is an even number.i

Confusing words: wrong, wrongly, wrongfully

As dictionaries tell us, the word wrong means ‘incorrect’. There’s nothing difficult or confusing about that, is there? Well, providing wrong is an adjective there isn’t (the wrong day, the wrong number, etc.).i

The trouble starts when we use wrong as an adverb and people start saying that it should be wrongly because adverbs always end in -ly. That’s true with many adverbs but in fact it IS acceptable to use both wrong and wrongly as an adverb. Here are two instances:i

If we want to sound less formal:i

  • He pronounced my name wrongly. [more formal]i ✓
  • He pronounced my name wrong. [less formal] i

Wrong can be used as an adverb instead of wrongly when it comes after a verb:i

  • It was spelt wrong. ✓ (also spelt wrongly = more formal)i

or after the object of a verb:i

  • He spelt the word wrong. ✓  (also spelt wrongly = more formal)i

! We cannot use wrong as an adverb before a past participle:i

  • His name was wrongly speltwrong spelt

or before a clause beginning with that:i

  • The newspaper stated wrongly that the company planned to open new offices in Paris. stated wrong that

Wrongfully

So how do we use wrongfully?i

Wrongfully is used in formal legal statements, as seen in these examples:i

  • He was wrongfully accused of murder. ✓ (They accused him but he was found not guilty.)i
  • He was innocent, so he was wrongfully imprisoned. ✓ (He was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.)i

We also use wrongfully with words like convicted and dismissed.

One of the most important factors in learning English is  pronunciation, for it is the first thing the audience realize about a speaker at the very beginning of speech. So, it is said that the most prestigious speakers have great pronunciation, and poor accent may lead in being known as a less knowledgable person in the field of English language learning or even taching in spite of being  very knowledgable and experienced.i

In order to improve your pronunciation and accent, you can take the following tips into account.i

a) Turks (Turkish People) are well known to be the most qualified people who can pronounce English as well as native speakers due to the variety of vowels in their language; however, they must be careful in order not to transfer the pronunciation of their first language in to English. The most troublesome sounds are( ch, j, and th). Be sure that you are producing them in a correct way.i

b) In order to be certain about your accent and pronunciation, try to imitate those who are successful in speaking. Also, try to benefit from listening to English conversations, then record your voice while practicing the conversation. By listening to your own voice, you can notice the areas of difficulties for you.i

c) Practice, practice, nad practice since there is the most famous saying that practice makes the perfect. Try to practice in front of a mirror while pronouncing special kinds of words in order to see the shape of your mouth and lips when producing those sounds, because each sound has particular features that must be recognized in pronunciation.i

Crazy English

Here is a terrific poem I have found which shows the unbelievable oddness of English language

Unfortunately, no-one seems to know the name of the genius who composed this fabulous poem about the craziness of the English language:

The English Lesson

We’ll begin with box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.
Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a whole lot of mice,
But the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be pen?
The cow in the plural may be cows or kine,
But the plural of vow is vows, not vine.
And I speak of a foot, and you show me your feet,
But I give a boot… would a pair be beet?
If one is a tooth, and a whole set is teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth?

If the singular is this, and the plural is these,
Why shouldn’t the plural of kiss be kese?
Then one may be that, and three be those,
Yet the plural of hat would never be hose.
We speak of a brother, and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.

The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis, and shim.
So our English, I think you will agree,
Is the trickiest language you ever did see.

I take it you already know
of tough, and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
on hiccough, through, slough and though.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead; it’s said like bed, not bead!
For goodness sake, don’t call it deed!

Watch out for meat and great and threat,
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt)
A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother.
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there’s dose and rose and lose –
Just look them up – and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword.

And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start.
A dreadful language: Why, man alive,
I’d learned to talk when I was five.
And yet to write it, the more I tried,
I hadn’t learned it at fifty-five.

[An alternative version quotes the final couplet as:

And yet to write it, the more I sigh,
I'll not learn how 'til the day I die.]

What a fabulous poem!  But such a shame no-one knows the author/s.   ,

Pot to piss in

پولدار بودن

In medieval London, people did not have indoor plumbing. It was common to use a chamber pot as an indoor toilet. The chamber pot could then be dumped out a window into the street gutter below. A person who did not have a "pot to piss in" was poor indeed.
In medieval times the word "piss" was not considered at all vulgar. It was not until Victorian England that words such as piss were deemed vulgar. Even today phrases like "pot to piss in" and "Full of Piss and Vinegar" are somehow considered to be generally acceptable and only moderately crude.

You want to have children! We can't afford them, we don't have a pot to piss in.
